John Screven military orders, 1864.

This collection contains two military orders for the Local Troops and City Lines of Georgia, a local militia group. The first is General Order No. 1 from Savannah, 1864, establishing the Depot of Atlantic and Gulf Rail Road Office as headquarters. It also includes orders for assemblies and equipment, and names the officers. Major John Screven was Commandant. The second orders are from Major John Screven to Captain M. Hogan from Headquarters, Savannah, 1864. Screven orders Hogan to assemble his Company.

John Screven was born on September 18, 1827, the son of James P. Screven and Hannah Georgia Bryan. He attended Franklin College (but did not graduate) and studied law. He was admitted to the bar in Savannah in 1849. That same year, he married Mary Footman (1827-1864). In 1852, Screven was appointed a justice of the Inferior Court, a position he held until 1866.
